A Rose By Any Other Name

This is a photo of some of the hundreds of very unusual islands in Phang Nga Bay between Phuket and the mainland of Thailand. One of these islands is differentiated from the others not visually, but because it was used in the James Bond movie, The Man With the Golden Gun. The island’s name is Khae Phing.

Tourists would come occasionally to see Khae Phing island, then someone got brilliant and changed the name to James Bond island. Now thousands of tourists every month come to see James Bond island. You can see below the boats that come and let tourists off, then have to back out into the bay while other boats come in to let other tourists off. This is a good example of Linkage, linking your compelling differentiation to your name. In this case, they changed the name of the island to fit its new differentiation. James Bond island is a Killer Brand as islands go. The second photo shows the 52 tourist trinket shops that fill every grain of space on the beach that connects the two sections of the island.

Wonderful. Except for the fact that they’ve ruined the place for those of us who like seclusion. Great for the sellers of bells and whistles, I guess. Progress?

I understand. Sometimes the business of developing KILLER BRANDS helps our lives and sometimes it complicates them, as you noted.

I can tell you that Phang Nga Bay has another three or four hundred islands that are completely secluded. I recommend a trip there. Stay at Amanpuri on Phuket. Their launch will take you over and you will have the trip of your life. Amanpuri by the way is a legitimate KILLER BRAND among resorts. The Aman brand is featured in my book.

We recently got back from our honeymoon to Phuket and really wish that we didn’t have to leave as we absolutely enjoyed it and will definitely visit again! We stayed at Siam Inn which we would for sure recommend. We hired a car at $70 for 9 days, it was by far the most cost effective and a convienent way to go and it was alot of fun too! The National Park is definitely worth while taking a tour. Also restaurants in Phuket Town to visit are Thai Food Heaven-romantic, delish and trendy. Book a table with your feet in the pool!
