Go To Fun Every Morning
3 Comments Published by Frank Lane October 13th, 2009 in Leadership, Personal PerformanceI was working today with Julie Paige Grant, one of our newer people. We were struggling through the first draft of a Brand Backbone Strategy document for a project of hers. I sympathized, “This is not easy. That’s why so few people do it, actually write down a brand strategy document for the long haul.” Her feedback in the midst of her struggle was, “Actually, this is kind of fun.”
I was reminded of Dean John Drewry in the University of Georgia’s Journalism School who taught us in the 60′s that “Nothing is work unless you would rather be doing something else. Find something that you love to do and it will never be work.” No wonder I have no desire to retire. It is fun.
Ask yourself. Do you go to work every morning, or do you go to fun?

Frank, your attitude reminds me of something Jonas Salk, a hero of mine, once said:
“The reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more.”
For those who may not know, Salk developed the first successful polio vaccine in 1955.
Hi Frank,
We’ve never met and we appear to live across the country from one another – me in Seattle and you in Atlanta. I discovered you tonight when, strictly on a whim, I put “Go To Fun” in my search engine. You see, I’ve been talking about going to fun instead of work for about 25 years. I was encouraged to start writing about it by colleagues and I thought I’d see if anyone else was doing the same thing.
I was certainly surprised to see that it’s not just something I imagined or made up. You see, I’ve been going to fun for almost 35 years… and when I realize I’m in a place where it isn’t fun any longer, I know it’s time for a change.
Like you, I”m the CMO in the insurance industry. It’s an industry that I never imagined could be fun…. but because I was able to apply my passion and enthusiasm for customer driven brands, it’s been pretty amazing.
Thought you might enjoy a post that I created on the topic recently. I’d love to hear from you on the question of identifying your passion and then finding someone to pay you for applying it “at fun”.
